This is nothing but a pipe dream, but I think Amazon should buy webOS from HP. Why? Because they have a proven record with their Kindle, and could come up with the cash to buy webOS from HP. Think about it, Amazon is about to launch an Android Tablet at the end of this year, but they don't control Android. Although Android is supposedly "open," everyone knows that Google really controls a lot of what happens on Android. If Google decided one day not to release Google apps for certain flavors of Android they could really screw certain players in the Android community.

It makes a lot of sense for Amazon to have their own tablet, they can push all of their books, music, and media to these tablet owners. But why would Amazon want to be at the mercy of another company, like Google. If Amazon owned webOS they could have complete control of it. They could use webOS to build some kind of "Kindle Pro," and at the same time license the OS to anyone who wants it. They have the resources to support a robust developer community and could probably make it very successful relatively quickly. Look at what they've done with the Kindle. They know how to please their customers.

HP says they want to keep webOS and continue to support it, but I don't believe them. They also told us we'd see top tier webOS devices this year, then pulled the rug out from under us. The truth is that if HP's former CEO, Mark Hurd, was still at the company things might be different, but HP has just made a major shift in their focus with the $10 billion acquisition of Autonomy. Sticking with a mobile operating system just doesn't seem to fit in with what they're doing now. At best, webOS would be on the back burner.

So, as silly as this dream is I wish it would happen. webOS is still the most intuitive mobile OS and all it needs is a new home. My vote is Amazon.
