The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the ".mobi" domain suffix for the use of cell phone users. Consumers will soon be able to recognize web sites that are specifically created for mobile phones by the new domain.
Although the announcement came on Monday, the first sites using the new domain suffix will likely not be available until sometime in 2006.
The new domain name was requested by a group of powerful mobile phone operators and handset makers which include Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, Huthison 3, GSM Association, Ericsson, Telefonica Moviles, and Vodafone.
