The big HP / Palm webOS event was today and it looks like HP is the brand going forward. The company announced 2 new webOS smartphones, the Veer, and the Palm Pre 3, as well as a TouchPad tablet.
The Veer is shaped much like the Pre, but has a very small 2.8 inch screen (Lame-O). It has a slide-up keyboard and is powered by a Snapdragon 7230 processor running at 1.2GHz. It includes a HSPA+ radio, of course Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1 and has 8GB of internal storage. It also features rear-facing camera and has mobile hotspot capabilities. The device will be available in the spring.
The Pre 3 has improved a little over the Pre 2. It now features a 1.4GHz processor, and a 3.6-inch capacitive touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution. That's a lot better than the Pre 2, but not over the top exciting. It has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and HD video recording capabilities, and a front-facing camera for video-calling. The device will be available in HSPA+ and CDMA Rev. A versions sometime this summer.
The TouchPad tablet looks a lot like the iPad. It has a 9.7" display, weighs 1.6 pounds, and is 13mm thick. It has a 1.3 mp camera for video calling.
So what do you think about the big announcement? I'm a little disappointed. I expected very high end hardware this time. I just do not understand how they could come up with the slickest mobile OS on the market, and package it with underpowered hardware, nearly go bankrupt, get bought by HP, and then not come out swinging with eye popping hardware. Oh well.
