Google Could Offer Free Nationwide Wi-Fi

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - August 15, 2005

Business 2.0 magazine is speculating that Google is will offer free Wi-Fi service across the United States. In an article in Business 2.0 magazine, Om Malik says that Google is buying up unused fiber-optic cable all over the country. He also mentions that Google is currently offering free Wi-Fi in San Francisco which looks to Malik like a test project that could go nationwide.

The speculation is that Google will support their free Wi-Fi project with advertising revenue. Google would apparently be able to tell where a user is on the network, and offer that user advertising specific to that area. So one might logon and see an add for a restaurant in the area.
