PalmSource Will Rename Operating Systems

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - February 04, 2004

PalmSource is planning a name change to its operating systems. According to cnet, CEO David Nagel says his company is making a change to its operating system strategy to eliminate confusion.

Palmsource's Palm OS 5 is intended for low-cost smart phones while their Palm OS 6 is for handhelds and high-end smart phones. PalmSource is worried that with two operating systems with different numbers customers might be confused. Some customers might be hesitent to purchase a smart phone that they feel is running an older OS. That's why PalmSource is moving away from numbering its operating systems and the two versions will be given new names that will make it clear that they have both recently been updated.

The announcement of what those names will be is expected next week.
