News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - February 10, 2004

Last week we told you that PalmSource was renaming their operating systems to take the numbering system out of the names. Today the announcement has come out about just how PalmSource will name their OS.

The two upcoming releases Palm OS Garnet and enterprise-oriented Palm OS Cobalt, are being previewed at the PalmSource Developers Conference in San Jose, California.

Palm OS Cobalt, previously Palm OS 6.0 will have several new features. For example, it will now support 256MB of RAM instead of the 128MB supported by Palm OS 5.0. Cobalt will also include improved graphics and multimedia support as well as a more robust contact manager with a tabbed layout. PalmSource has also improved its support for various types of connectivity, including simultaneous voice and data sessions.

Palm OS Garnet, is basically an improved version of Palm 5. Among its features are support for higher screen resolutions and a software-based Graffiti input area that can vanish as required. Garnet will feature us enhanced tools for Bluetooth and will support 128MB of RAM.
