Palm Plans Name Change, New Logo

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - August 18, 2003

Palm, Inc. has announced plans to split into three companies later this year. This marks the latest chapter in Palm's evolution as it tries to keep it's position on top of the handheld world.

PalmSource, Inc., will be spun-out from Palm, Inc. as an independent, publicly traded company under the NASDAQ ticker symbol PSRC. PalmSource is the company behind the Palm OS. The remaining Palm division, the Palm Solutions Group, will be renamed palmOne, Inc. palmOne will change its NASDAQ ticker symbol from "PALM" to "PLMO.' It will continue to market handhelds under the Zire and Tungsten brands. At the same time, Handspring, Inc. will be dissolved and its Treo smartphones will be absorbed into palmOne.

The third comany will be a holding company that is owned jointly by PalmSource (55%) and palmOne (45%). The holding company would own the Palm name and trademark as well as the new logo.
