Palm Set to Release a New Device for Under $100

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - September 20, 2002

According to various sources it seems as though Palm has planned to release a new device, rumored to be named Zire, with a suggested retail price that will come in under $100. This entry level device should hit markets early in October.

Reports suggest that Palm is looking to the entry level market as a great way to grow it's customer base. If the rumors are true, and the device truly sells for under $100 it could become a very big seller for Palm.

Palm is said to be looking at introducing this low-level device in stores other than the traditional electronics retailers. This innovative thinking may expose an entirely new segment of the population to Palm's.

At the same time that Palm is readying it's lowest priced Palm the company is busy putting the finishing touches on their soon to be released line of products featuring Palm OS 5. These products are expected to hit market before the end of October.

Editor's Take
It looks like Palm is really poising itself for a successful run in 2003. The entry-level device has a lot of promise as long as Palm can maintain all of the standard functionality for the reduced price. They've also got OS 5 coming out, and by sending a couple nice OS 5 devices to market before the holiday rush Palm will may be able to keep people from purchasing Pocket PC devices.

2003 looks to be a major make or break year for Palm. Will OS 5 live up to all he hype? How will Palm's new entry level device hold up to the competition? Stay tuned for the results...
