Palm OS, Wrist PDA from Fossil

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - November 19, 2002

It was widely reported that PalmSource was preparing to announce some new Palm OS licensees. There was a lot of buzz about who the new licensee would be. The cat is now out of the bag, and the new licensee is Fossil. Fossil has licensed the Palm OS for a new wrist PDA.

The WRIST PDA will be a full fledged Palm OS device, unlike Fossil's previous watch PDA. The previous device was able to 'talk' with Palm OS devices, but the watch did not run on the Palm OS. The WRIST PDA will be a true Palm Powered device running on Palm OS 4.1.

The WRIST PDA will be powered by a 33 MHz Dragonball processor. It will have 2 MB of RAM and 2 MB of Flash memory. The touchscreen will have the standard Palm OS resolution of 160 x 160. This will allow it to run any standard Palm OS application. The manufacturer recommends running applications that have been optimized for the smaller screen of the WRIST PDA. Also included will be a rocker switch and an IR port.

Editor's Take
Although I'm usually excited to hear about innovative products and devices such as the WRIST PDA, I'm actually quite disappointed by this announcement. The WRIST PDA will be running on Palm OS 4.1. When this device hits market in the middle of 2003 OS 5 will have been out for for 8 months, and OS 6 will be on the way. The device is definitely innovative, and there could be a market for it, but I think that this particular device will struggle to capture market share with a dated OS.
